WASHINGTON, DC, September 24, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- The American Kratom Association will hold a live virtual press conference on Friday, September 25, at 9:30 a.m. ET to respond to news coverage of the tragic deaths of two University of Mississippi students — coverage that, in many outlets, has attributed those deaths to kratom before autopsies and toxicology results have been completed or released.
Lafayette County Metro Narcotics has stated that investigators “do not have confirmed information indicating that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death,” that there is no confirmed evidence the two deaths are connected, and that the cases are being investigated separately. University and law enforcement officials have asked the public to avoid speculation while the investigations are underway.
Much of the reporting to date has not reflected those statements.

The briefing is intended for journalists covering the Ole Miss deaths, kratom, and the emerging synthetic-opioid supply. The AKA and experts will walk through what law enforcement has and has not confirmed; why a package labeled “kratom” at a scene establishes neither ingestion nor causation, nor what the product actually contained; the difference between natural kratom leaf and the concentrated or chemically manipulated 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and synthetic products — including mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, and MGM-16 — that the Drug Enforcement Administration moved to schedule on July 1.
The AKA and experts will also cover the guidance from NMS Labs, the nation’s leading forensic toxicology laboratory, that routine toxicology panels may not detect novel or chemically modified substances; the comprehensive quantitative toxicology the AKA is urging Mississippi investigators to conduct; the unverified reports circulating in the university community about a different synthetic opioid, and what responsible reporting looks like until the science is in.

WEST MONROE, Louisiana, September 24, 2026 — As advanced driver-assistance systems become standard equipment on new vehicles, Redeemed Auto Body is drawing attention to a step in collision repair that vehicle owners often overlook: the post-repair diagnostic scan. The West Monroe collision center says confirming that safety systems function correctly after a repair matters as much as the bodywork itself, particularly as federal safety mandates expand.

Vehicle Safety Technology Is Becoming Standard Equipment
The scan reads a vehicle's onboard computer modules once repair work is complete, verifying that no new fault codes appeared during the process. It also confirms that critical electrical systems, from airbag deployment sensors to stability and lane-assist controls, are communicating normally.
According to a PARTS report released in September 2024 and publicized by MITRE in October 2024, the Partnership for Analytics Research in Traffic Safety is a collaboration between automakers and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). By the 2023 model year, 10 of 14 tracked advanced driver-assistance features had exceeded 50% market penetration, with five exceeding 90%.
As that technology becomes routine equipment on late-model vehicles, verifying it still functions after auto collision repair has become an expectation among automakers, not an optional add-on.
A Skipped Scan Can Leave Safety Systems Unverified
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also finalized a rule requiring forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian automatic emergency braking on nearly all new light vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2029.  The rule is expected to extend camera- and radar-based collision-avoidance systems across the light-vehicle industry, although it does not prescribe a specific sensor technology. Collision repair services that skip a thorough post-repair scan, or clear a fault code without identifying its cause, risk returning a vehicle with a safety system that appears resolved but isn't functioning as intended. Wiring damaged in a collision is not always visible on inspection, and a code cleared without diagnosis can leave the underlying issue in place until it resurfaces.

Founder and Owner Walt Silmon said the scan is a step that gets rushed at some shops. "A vehicle can look finished on the outside and still have a system underneath that isn't reporting the way it should," Silmon said. That's the difference between a repair that looks done and one that's actually finished."
