LEXINGTON, Kentucky – The Rowan County Board of Education has entered into a $3 million settlement agreement with a former student, identified as Jane Doe. The settlement resolves a 2023 lawsuit involving sexual abuse by former faculty member and assistant coach Andrew Zaheri. Andrew Zaheri is currently serving a 22-year sentence in a federal correctional institution.

Commitment to Training and Reporting

As part of the agreement, Rowan County Schools will implement additional safety measures. While staff currently receive annual harassment training and instruction on their duty to report abuse, the district’s attorneys will conduct specialized training this fall.

The training will focus on "the duties all school employees have to abstain from this behavior, and the obligation to report any inappropriate behavior to the appropriate authorities," according to Superintendent Michael Rowe.

Attorneys for the victim noted that this is believed to be the largest settlement of its kind in Kentucky history involving a single victim in a school system. The non-monetary portion of the agreement requires all teachers and school staff to undergo this annual training aimed at preventing similar cases in the future.
